We’ve always been told to use EFT on everything, but could that really be true for something like grief?
A couple of years ago, this was really put to the test for me where I had 3 significant deaths in a very short space of time.
But where to start? Applying EFT to grief and loss
The first word that I think of when dealing with grief is gentleness.
With grief, the feelings can be so raw and intense at times, that some people want to push it down or alternatively, just push through it in an effort to have things go back to the way they were.
Unfortunately, in my experience, that just didn’t work.
For me, it was about being present to whatever came up and then deal with it as best I could, in the moment.
One very intense emotion that came up at times was feeling overwhelmed. And it is very hard to do anything when you are feeling like this, so this is where I started:
‘Even though I feel overwhelmed, I deeply and completely accept myself.’
I would usually tap and get the intensity down to about a 3. Somehow things felt a little more manageable.
And then as other emotions arose, tapping on them while holding compassion for myself, and keeping things simple.
EFT is very much about meeting yourself where you are at. If you try and force yourself to feel better, sometimes you can feel worse.
Even tapping and saying: even though, this is all too much and I can’t deal with it now…. just acknowledges where you are and somehow saying it out loud feels good.
Remember that when you tap it sends a calming signal to the brain, so tapping and talking about whatever is on your mind may help you to feel better, and soften things for you.
Grief can be exhausting and I was able to recognise when I needed support, and this is when I reached out to other EFT practitioners. It was a relief to hand over to someone else to guide me through the tapping.
So go gently with where you are at and see how tapping could help you.
