Throughout our formative years we process events to the best of our ability, according to the information and the resources we have available to us, at that particular moment.
As we grow up we learn to respond to events based on what has worked well for us previously, and sometimes on what hasn’t worked so well. We build resilience.
During our early years we can be exposed to a caring, loving environment which encourages our brains to produce serotonin - the happy hormone. On the other hand we could suffer threats whether physical, emotional or social, thus releasing cortisol, the stress hormone.
How we learn to respond creates our propensity towards fight, flight or freeze responses and our resilience.
The amygdala in our brain is constantly seeking out potential threats. The hippocampus stores the remembered responses. If there is a glut of negative events too much cortisol is created leading to overwhelm, anxiety and stress. If left untreated, this can spill over into our cells causing inflammation, pain and dis-ease.
When we use EFT and tap, using a personal phrase relating to a threatening incident, the somatic and verbal components join to release serotonin and reduce the level of cortisol. The increased serotonin creates a more positive response to the initial remembered threat.
There may be many layers to one event: the felt fear, the language used, the smells, the feeling held in the body. Whatever presents whilst you are tapping is worth further investigation and more tapping.
In the world of EFT we refer to these layers as the legs in a table top metaphor. The table top being the presenting issue. The legs are the beliefs and memories that hold up the table top.
To further build on your own resilience in today’s world climate of too much news and easy access to social media, why not add a daily gratitude tapping habit? Just two minutes a day can help boost serotonin levels and nurture a more positive feeling within.
