EFT for Chronic Headaches: A Personal Story

By: Kathleen Weber | 11 December, 2024

Person with a headache

Have you ever wondered if EFT can help with chronic pain? I can tell you from personal experience that it can indeed!

Back in February of 2023, I started experiencing intense pressure headaches. They would occur every time I bent over, sneezed, coughed, or cheered for my son playing soccer. Normal daily activities like loading the dishwasher and doing laundry brought on excruciating pain. It felt like my head was going to explode. I began to dread the simple task of putting on my shoes. By the end of the day, I felt worn out and had little capacity to think straight. After a decent night of sleep, I would start the day OK and then the cycle would start all over again—every day for over a year.

Searching for Answers

I followed the traditional medical route, visiting several doctors with no real answers, and ended up seeing a neurologist. I had several MRIs, which showed nothing significant. My bloodwork was normal. These headaches were an anomaly. Ultimately, they wanted to do a lumbar puncture to measure the pressure in my spinal column. The doctor shared that this procedure would make my headaches worse.

When I asked about what she hoped to learn from such a procedure, she said that they wanted to confirm the diagnosis of idiopathic intracranial hypertension. Basically, this meant that I has additional pressure in my skull and she didn’t know why. She wanted to make sure she prescribed the right medication to manage my pain. After my experience with chronic Lyme disease, just being placed on medicine to manage symptoms was not good enough for me. I needed answers as to why the pressure was there in the first place.

Using EFT for Self Healing

As an advanced certified and accredited EFT practitioner, I have learned techniques that are beautiful, creative, and gentle. My journey has helped me understand the undeniable connection among our thoughts, our emotions, and our physiology, and how these techniques can support the natural ability for the body to heal. So, I decided to try some of the advanced techniques on my own symptoms. I set aside time for myself, just as I would with any client. These are the steps I followed:

  • I used clinical EFT to sit with the feelings I had about the headaches (frustration, anger, and worry) and allowed the tapping to help me process those feelings. “Even though I feel this frustration, just thinking that my head will hurt so bad the next time I bend over to put on my shoes, I deeply and completely accept myself.” After several rounds following the various emotions that showed up for me, I arrived at a curious place, wondering what these headaches were trying to tell me.
  • I remained curious as I interacted with the pain, letting it share images with me that didn’t seem to make any sense at the time, but I trusted that there was a reason why I was seeing what I was seeing. The initial visual that came to me was a cartoon image of a ticking time bomb. I tapped on the description of the image. “Even though I see this cartoon image of a ticking time bomb that’s about 10 yards in front of me, I deeply and completely accept myself.” I did several rounds tapping on what I was seeing.
  • I noticed some strong emotions coming up as I tuned in to the image. “Even though I feel scared in my chest seeing this ticking time bomb that is jumping up and down, I deeply and completely accept myself.” I repeated this process several times, noticing the shifts with the image and honoring my feelings and thoughts as a response to the image.

Observing the Results

After honoring my feelings and body sensations as I interacted with these images, I began to notice a decrease in the pressure in my head. I felt lighter. However, I have to admit that I expected my head to hurt the next time I coughed or bent over… and it did... but over the next few weeks, the pressure in my head gradually disappeared! I was astonished. It has now been nine months since I self-applied those techniques, and I am happy to say that I am headache-free! I was able to address the underlying emotional issue and my physiology changed.

I will always recommend working with licensed medical professionals for any health issues, but EFT can be an incredible supplement to traditional health care and can address underlying emotional issues that won’t be addressed with traditional Western medicine.
