For as long as I can remember I have bitten my nails, including my toe nails when my bones were softer!
It became a huge bone of contention between me and my mother, her mother and my eccentric great aunts. From an early age I was fed a constant negative narrative about the woes of biting your nails, and what would happen if you didn’t stop - woe betide you!
So bad was my addiction to my nails that I recall a nail bed giving in and releasing the prized content. At age 5 I don’t remember any pain. My overarching memory is my mother telling me how she had had to ruin a perfectly good pair of gloves in order to make a finger cover so that the injury didn’t get infected. My young mind’s takeaway being that she valued the gloves much more than me.
Months later mum painted my nails with a foul tasting varnish, but she made the mistake of telling me it was poison. I defiantly placed my thumb in my mouth and declared, ‘I’m not dead yet’. My poor mum gave up and left me to my nailbiting ways.
Using EFT For Nailbiting
We would still lock horns, but when I began training as an EFT practitioner, and as part of the Personal Peace Procedure, I looked at my nailbiting with fresh and more mature eyes. I could see that although we remained at loggerheads, my nailbiting brought me time with my mother in a busy household. In her own way, she was demonstrating love and my grandmother and her sisters had meant well with all their tales of woe.
It took me a while to tap through all the memories and feelings that nailbiting evoked through my growing years. In fact I came back to it several times before I had the full epiphany moment that I no longer needed my mother’s attention (in that way).
Today, I have nice enough nails - not perfect in anyway - and I definitely won’t make it as a hand model!
So if you have an addiction or a habit (perhaps chocolate or coffee) and want to work on the whys and wherefores, be prepared to look at your younger days and peel back the layers of where your need started. It’s quite a worthwhile journey.
