I recently worked with a 35-year-old homeopath using EFT for relationships. I will call her Amy to protect her confidentiality. She had paused her practice because stress made it difficult to concentrate. She originally contacted me for help with the emotional toll of a delayed marriage. She also wanted support in finding the right partner. She carried heavy limiting beliefs about herself. She felt she could not judge people easily and lacked communication skills. It was clear she had many writings on the wall regarding relationships.
Uncovering the Core Beliefs
I asked her when she first felt misunderstood. She recalled moving to a new place at age six. A teacher had punished her for simply asking a question. Amy felt she had entered a strange place where people were cruel. She believed the people there were not her kind. Even today, her Subjective Units of Distress was a 10 regarding the feeling of not belonging. We began tapping on the side of the hand with a setup statement affirming that even though she did not belong, she deeply and completely accepted herself. We then tapped the sequence on the meridian endpoints.
She gave the school incident the title "Bad World" with a guessed intensity of 10. A practitioner reframe failed to land. Her mind argued the whole world was genuinely bad. She listed ten different incidents supporting this belief, acting as legs to her table. We chose to focus on the most disturbing event. To avoid abreactions, we used the Tearless Trauma Technique on the title "That Uncle." After four rounds, the intensity dropped to a 2. Having built rapport, we transitioned to the Tell The Story Technique to safely process the remaining emotions.
Chasing the Somatic Pain
In our next session, Amy reported the specific incident was cleared. However, a global fear remained at a 10. We set up our tapping for this unknown fearful feeling. Immediately, she experienced strong physical sensations. She felt a severe headache, neck tightness, and a feverish feeling, all at a 10. By chasing the pain for three rounds, we reduced these sensations to zero and two. We cleared the remaining headache with two more rounds.
Detective work revealed this fear traced back to age five. It predated the teacher incident and was independent of her parents. We tapped on having this fear from age five. The physical sensations moved through her body. They turned into a cold feeling and throat discomfort before completely disappearing after four rounds. She left the session feeling fresh and powerful.
Addressing Anxiety About Marriage
Our third session focused specifically on marriage. Amy realized she felt zero physical or mental energy for it, rating her exhaustion at a 10. This manifested as overwhelm, anxiety, and physical heaviness. She visualized these feelings as a steel grey color. After tapping, the distress halved, and the color lightened to greyish white.
A new aspect then emerged. She feared that if she could not fulfill her responsibilities, a partner would leave her. We tapped through various aspects related to getting married for eight rounds. This led to a beautiful cognitive shift. She realized her past missed opportunities happened because she was not open to them. Now, she felt ready. We tapped on this new optimistic feeling to close the session.
The Generalization Effect in Action
By the fourth session, the generalization effect of EFT was undeniable. Without directly targeting her career, Amy had naturally resumed seeing homeopathy patients. She had also re-engaged with her hobbies.
Returning to the marriage issue, she admitted feeling desperate but disheartened by past failures. We tapped on this until she pinpointed an unrequited emotional attachment from six years prior. Using the Tearless Trauma Technique again, we addressed the title "Attachment." This unearthed deep beliefs of being a failure and feeling worthless at a 10. After three rounds of tapping, another cognitive shift occurred. Amy confidently stated that if she heads in the right direction, she can succeed. We tapped on this positive feeling.
Practitioner Reflections: EFT for Relationships and Beyond
We continue to work together to release remaining layers. Amy has already moved from a state of total overwhelm to an empowered space. This case beautifully illustrates how tapping gently unravels intertwined issues. It allows profound shifts in targeted goals and completely unexpected areas of life.
