I was recently having a chat with some EFT colleagues and one of them mentioned that a well-known performer spoke on tv about tapping and how he used it as a crutch before every performance, due to his anxiety.
But is EFT just a crutch?
A crutch implies that we are dependent on something and that we can’t function without it. It is something to lean on when we are unable to support ourselves.
This really misses the point of EFT and how much more there is to it.
For me, EFT can operate at two levels.
The first level is where we can tap on surface stress or anxiety as situations occur, and EFT is so helpful in those situations, to calm our nervous system in the moment.
But the second level for EFT is about going much deeper and finding the root causes of where the emotion comes from. What is at the heart of why the person is experiencing this anxiety or stress?
In my work, I have worked with so many people who have difficulty speaking up in one form or another.
To really help them, I don’t want them to feel that if they don’t tap every time before they have to speak at a meeting, they won’t be able to perform to the best of their ability.
What I want to do is to help them to find what it is from their past that is causing them to feel this way, and then gently working with them to process and neutralise these events, so that they can move into this situation feeling calm and confident.
Life happens and we will always face new challenges which can upset us. As you clear and neutralise old memories, your resilience grows. Situations which in the past might have felt overwhelming now feel neutral.
So, is EFT a crutch?
Well, it can be used that way. But EFT stands for Emotional Freedom Techniques, and that is what it is designed to do. To give us freedom by removing the emotional charges that keep us stuck.
When we heal the root cause through tapping, we no longer need the crutch.
