In a recent online EFT Level 1 training I ran, I watched the individuals grow in confidence to successfully apply the beginners knowledge shared. By the end one noted how natural it felt to cancel a subscription to a tapping app. Others no longer felt the need to use tap along videos on YouTube, which gave results so much weaker than what they could achieve by applying their new knowledge.
What prompted these decisions?
Put simply, it was the experience they’d gained at home whilst applying the knowledge I shared each week. After each 3 hour 15 min module I would give homework to integrate the technique and information they’d learnt. This personalised practice time allowed for their results to go deeper than any script driven approach they’d tried.
Why do we experience such a difference between Tapping-lite - my name for simple script-driven materials prepared by someone else – and focused self directed EFT?
5 reasons why focused EFT wins over generic scripts
1. The language used is specific to you
The language in Tapping-lite is unlikely to be specific to your unique situation. General wording can give a sense of being heard and a framework for change. But the real gift of skilful EFT comes from addressing your truth in the way you perceive a situation. One person’s phobia of flying might revolve around the sensory experience of taking off in a plane. If they’re more affected by sound than motion the language needs to be fine-tuned for this. Another person might be reacting to TV footage that was on constant sharing on media in the aftermath of 9-11. Very different language needed.
2. Your unique life experience is addressed
It isn’t possible for video tap alongs to directly address your specific table leg memories. These are the unique events from your life experience that prop up the overall table-top problem. Miss a specific troublesome part of the memory and the table leg still has strength to keep the table top up. Then you wonder why your well-intentioned copying isn’t delivering the full result that was promised. Addressing key life events in safe and gentle ways is the most efficient way to deliver the peaceful resolution you seek. Tapping along to well-intentioned affirmations for your inner child might feel soulful and give you a feeling of being cared for. But EFT addresses the energy behind negative thoughts and experiences. We don’t gain much benefit by ‘tapping in the positive’ beyond a general upliftment that is often temporary.
3. Transformation is more likely to last
Relying only on script driven tapping is unlikely to break down your journey towards attaining deeply held goals. If you have several challenging events which underpin the problem, you need to address each one in a kind and structured way. General language in EFT-lite will merely wipe dust off the table top surface. These mechanical approaches can give symptom relief – but then you need to keep repeating them regularly to get a sense of being ok.
I’ve read of celebrities, like singer and actor Michael Ball, describe in the media using robotic tapping routines just to cope with performance nerves before they go on stage. They do Tapping-lite just to manage rather than grow in lasting confidence through the use of skilful EFT. This is a great loss.
Everything I’ve experienced with EFT in over 20 years of personal work is that once I’ve dealt with the relevant table legs, the problem doesn’t return. This is the gift of skilful, quality EFT.
4. Growth happens when empowered
Tapping-lite takes you into a mechanical activity where you’re not empowered to grow into your best self. You have to keep following someone’s content just to stay afloat.
I have an exercise on my Level 1 training about how to ease cravings. One individual wanted to lessen their need for using tap-along videos as a way to cope with daily stresses. I’d never even considered this as an addictive craving before they named it! We discussed whether it would be helpful for them to approach the issue in class before doing the exercise. In conversation it became clear that over the previous 3 weeks their self care with what I’d taught them had eased their urge to use tap-along videos as a crutch. In the end, we concluded there was no craving for them to tap on before I ran the exercise for the rest of the class! This is the benefit that tending to past events delivers!
5. Tailored responses foster co-regulation and safety
A soulful and thoughtful script can give us a sense of being heard and held safely in a professionally considered way. This is at the heart of effective emotional co-regulation when done in a respectful way. It can work in combination with individual self care as the script can help us reflect on new ideas.
However, it will always be surpassed by an individual who is responsive to the immediacy of what you have to say about your situation. Any AI driven or content aimed for a mass market can never offer the degree of being ‘heard’ that a tailored unique response can provide. I invite you to experience skilful EFT led by a human in an individual session or group. Then compare the space holding you may have encountered in anonymous scripts and videos.
Skilful EFT always empowers at an individual level. Done with respect, care and in a safe structured way it delivers results that are breathtaking.
One of my students applied what I'd taught in how to deal with physical pain. They expressed how mind-blowing the 10 minutes spent doing personalised and focused care had been on a longstanding issue!
Knowing I’d empowered them to this outcome brought the biggest smile to my face!
