Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) is an energy psychology consisting of cognitive and somatic components. It is used to treat negative emotions and related emotional and physical disorders. Stress neurotransmitters are secreted in the brain when a person is stressed, while the amygdala and other emotion-related brain regions are activated. If effective coping with stress does not occur, physical and psychological elements can become chronic. The steps of EFT recommend that a person focus on the most stressful aspects of an issue (exposure), after which they use their fingertips to tap on acupressure points. Different protocols are prescribed for various problems. In this review, Pubmed, Google Scholar and other databases were examined. EFT was found to be efficacious for both physiological and psychological ailments, in demographically dissimilar populations, and across the spectrum of ages from children to adults. It was also found to be safe: In the many randomized controlled trials performed to date, no adverse events have been reported. The review indicates that emotions can be safely recognized, accepted and transformed with EFT.
