For about 30 years, I have wanted to be a person who walks regularly. Just for the joy of it. Just to move my body and be healthy. I have tapped about many issues that I suspected were the cause of my resistance (my father didn’t like us to waste energy that could be used to do work for him, a playing child was equivalent to an idling car,) but I never succeeded in becoming a walker - until now.
Using Tell a Future Story Technique
I was tired of detective work and was trying to find a way to get at my resistance with tapping, without needing to know what the cause of the resistance was. Tell a Future Story seemed like it might work. I made two attempts. After the first attempt in April of 2026, I was able to walk about 3 times (not bad) before I stopped. It was somewhat effective, but I believe that the missing ingredient was more steps to the story.
The second time on July 12, 2026, I really broke down the story. I didn’t use a title. I didn’t use a set-up phrase. Instead, I tapped and told the story until some kind of thought, emotion, belief or sensation arose. I tapped about that part of the story until it was gone, then started again from the beginning of the story and tapped until another thought/emotion/belief/sensation arose. Rinse and repeat.
My story went like this:
The alarm goes off.
I feed the cats.
I want to go for a walk.
I get dressed.
I put on my shoes.
I open the door.
I step outside.
I start walking.
The amount of detail can be as much as you want. The first time I tapped, I didn’t have as many steps included. The second attempt looked like what you see above. There was resistance at nearly every point and the process took an hour to complete. Some points took several minutes to clear what came up. (I have been tapping regularly for 20 years. Your mileage may vary.)
Result!
The next morning, I went for a walk. I have walked every day since, with the exception of two where the logistics didn’t work for me, but it didn’t stop me from walking the next day. It didn’t trigger resistance or any “giving up.” I woke up early a couple days to make my walk possible. I also walked late at night to make the walk possible. I walked in the rain. I can’t imagine my past self doing anything but giving up on the process. I can say with assurance, that I am now a person who walks regularly - every day even!
So, when you are trying to make a lifestyle change, with yourself or with a client, consider trying this Tell a Future Story Technique. Like all Tell the Story techniques, it takes time to do quality work, but it’s worth it.
