One of the mainstays of Emotional Freedom Techniques is the use of your own words when tapping alone or with a practitioner.
Simply jumping in and starting to tap using a script, no matter how good, can often get a result, but it just won’t go deep enough. This can often leave someone feeling like tapping just doesn’t work. And also, a script cannot cover every aspect of a scenario you’ve just experienced.
For instance, at work you may get called to an out-of-the-blue meeting with your manager. An immediate thought might be, ‘what did I do?’ Which could set off all kinds of thoughts, memories and emotions.
Tapping On Your Own - Using Your Own Words
In this instance, tapping alone, I might think about starting with
‘Even though I feel anxious as my manager wants to see me, and I don’t think I’ve done anything wrong, I completely love and accept myself’.
Checking in on how I feel with 0 being good and 10 being anxious, I might set this at a 6. After carrying out a bodycheck, I can check where in my body I am feeling this (chest), what does it look like (heavy weight), and what colour is it (grey)?
Repeating the set-up phrase three times whilst tapping on the side of hand, is followed by tapping rounds stating, ‘feeling anxious, my manager wants to see me’ along with ‘I don’t think I’ve done anything wrong’.
Further rounds could include ‘this feeling in my chest’, and ‘this grey, heavy weight’. Moving into ‘I’m sure I haven’t done anything wrong’, ‘there’s nothing to worry about’ and finally ‘everything is fine’.
During which I would regularly check in on how I feel on the 0-10 scale. My aim is to calm myself from overthinking before the meeting starts and send calming messages to my brain.
Tapping With A Practitioner - Using Client's Words
A practitioner is taught to listen carefully to the client and note their phraseology, how they feel, how they describe a sensation, where this is in the body and even colour and shape. It is all important.
Helping to create a set-up phrase with their words, gently engaging with them to help them form the phrase themselves, creates trust and assures the client they are in charge, and the pace is set by them.
So, the next time you have an opportunity to tap, remember to pay attention to your thoughts, feelings and words. Where you were, the weather, who said what? Using your words goes a long way to make your tapping experience successful.
