Whether it is man-made or a natural disaster or simply everything around you feels out of control, here are a few tips to help you settle and re-balance yourself back into feeling peace.
Everyone knows I am a Tapping trainer, and Tapping is fantastic! However, not everything or event or moment is actually right for Tapping.
Surprised?
That’s because sometimes we’re in an alarmed or triggered state, and what we really need in the moment is Emotional First-Aid. Other times we are in a state of rumination, and again, Emotional First-Aid might be just the thing to pop you out of that whirlpool dragging you down. Once grounded and ‘back online,’ Tapping is of supreme help.
I would point you to some in-the-moment things you could do, right away, to take any discomfort or dispel any leftover activation from a shock or threat.
I’d suggest deeper, slower breathing while putting both palms over your chest, to start. There are many techniques I use in my Emotional First-Aid toolbox, but another I’d recommend right away is TTT, or Trauma Tapping Technique. *
And Later...
***when you feel more grounded and present:***
You might need to take a look at anything in your current surroundings contributing to the feelings or anxiousness around the problem you’re grappling with. For instance, a 24-7 news-cycle or social media cycle might be keeping you in a triggered state. If you suspect this might be happening to you, there are a few common-sense practices you might consider, instead of allowing the surrounding environment to swamp your moods and thoughts:
Consider who you are talking or listening to.
You might want to change that up for someone you know to be very grounded, or wise or even just smartly informed about an issue or state that concerns you. Not only does that defeat isolation (1 of 4 traumatic characteristic markers), but it is reassuring and soothing to speak with someone knowledgeable and trusted.
Look for perspective-enhancing information.
Or a line of personal questions that keep the situation at hand IN-perspective. This is actually a good place to Tap, btw, and with the simple truth:
Even though this feels really big and overwhelming right now…I acknowledge that it is but one thing of billions going on in the world in this moment….”
You can find a lot of these in my book on Amazon, How to Be A Great Detective.
Take a break,
change up the scenery or sounds or company or environment…or all of it! Overwhelmed, over-exposed? It all adds up to the same thing – too much! Gift yourself a break, an exit, a walk, a change of venue.
Be honest with yourself.
Those who’ve taken my trainings know I am always using one of my famous mantras, like this one:
Tapping is about telling the compassionate Truth, and the first person we need to tell it to is ourself.”
So tell the truth! And yes, Tap with it:
Even though I am feeling overwhelmed, I acknowledge how I feel. Although this is too much for me to comfortably handle, I honor the information and am taking steps to deal with that, right now. The truth is, I am so over it, and I need to take the time to feel what I feel and process all this… I DO deeply and completely accept myself and all that I am feeling.”
What else do you need to feel more comfortable?
To feel the power of self-care and self-soothing? There are a million ways – find yours, and apply it often. Consider a diffuser with organic Wild Orange oil, a brisk walk or exercise break with your favorite DVD personal trainer. The most delicious kind of coffee or tea or smoothie that you can make for yourself, a quick favorite song dance on your Rebounder. A phone call to an old friend instead of cramming in one more task. Taking the moment to watch a hilarious video or just watch little ones on the playground exercising their joy glands. : )
Taking care of ourselves, first, is always our #1 job. It’s not just for airplanes!
Make a difference in the world.
Put your total focus and presence into something that needs you. Even if you only have a few minutes, pull out all the stops. Place your total attention and actions on enthusiasm, gratitude, earnest kindness, tender nurture. A safe or nourishing caress or touch to let others know you care. You’ll be amazed about how little it takes, and how fast it works.
Still wrestling with big, unresolved stuff?
Besides giving yourself the generous gift of time, consider reaching out to someone skilled in what you’re dealing with. Expert Tappers come in all sizes, shapes and specialities. Don’t miss the opportunity to invite them to help you. You can also look into those who offer swaps (like EFTinternational.org). Or pro-bonos. Or groups of support (like the EFTGuild.org). These can help you find the right people to help you move through whatever you’re dealing with.
This message comes from the heart. I hope you can hear it, use it and if you’re ready, call me – or another highly skilled accredited, certified EFT practitioner - to take this journey with you.
You are not alone, your feelings count, and we can show you how to not only survive all those feelings, but thrive because of them.
